TOPColumnSpeaking and Performing Gagaku in Cologne

On March 18, 2026, a Gagaku performance with commentary will take place at the Japanisches Kulturinstitut Köln.
The music will be performed by the Cologne Gagaku Ensemble, with explanations provided by myself.

Gagaku is the court music of Japan and has been handed down for more than 1,300 years with remarkably little change.
Despite its ancient origins, this music continues to resonate strongly in the modern world.

Why has this sound endured for so long?
What kind of aesthetic sense and perception of time lie behind it?
Through live performance and spoken commentary, this event offers an opportunity to approach these questions directly.

Admission is free, but registration is required.
Those interested are warmly invited to experience this music in person.

Date: March 18, 2026, 7:00 PM
Venue: Japanisches Kulturinstitut Köln
Admission: Free (registration required)
